Northern Futures participants found inspiration in each other and their shared education journey when they completed a Certificate III Individual Support this year.

At a ceremony to mark the completion of the six-month course, 10 graduates spoke about the enjoyment in getting to know each other as a group and the satisfaction in looking ahead towards a career in aged care, home and community care and disability services.

The audience heard that each participant had their own reason for starting the course. Some came from previous occupations, some had been out of work, others came straight from school. But, they bonded “like a family” and made a pact to finish the course together.

Course placements at Uniting AgeWell Kalkee Nangatta, St Laurence Costa House, Maryville Nursing Home, mecwacare Elstoft House and Percy Baxter Lodge McKellar Centre gave participants plenty of hands-on training and an insight into the way their skills and attitude can have a positive impact on a person’s day.

New graduate Louise told the audience that after 30 years working in retail her decision to retrain had opened her eyes to the amazing possibilities of working in the aging and disability sector and the patients she encountered during her placement reminded her to live in the moment every day.

The course, delivered by The Gordon at Northern Futures, was supported by Northern Futures Industry Partners with referrals and support from local jobactive providers.
